Venezuela’s top food company has accused troops of illegally seizing more than 500 tonnes of food from its trucks as part of President Hugo Chavez’s campaign to stem shortages.
Yep, sure beats letting the market system work.
The leftist Chavez this week created a state food distributor and loosened some price controls, seeking to end months of shortages for staples like milk and eggs that have caused long lines and upset his supporters in the OPEC nation.
Long lines for food? What’s that called? PROGRESS! That’s what the left likes, right?
The highly publicised campaign has also included government crackdowns on accused smuggling, with the military seizing 1,600 tonnes of food and sending 1,200 troops to the border with Colombia.
You know, if you have to get the military involved in the food chain then something is seriously wrong. And if people are smuggling food, then something is even more wrong. But then again, you can’t have progress without a few minor bumps in the road.
Business leaders say shortages of these products are caused by strict price controls, which have lagged inflation that is Latin America’s highest.
Price controls? High inflation? Must be those side effects of ‘progress’. Ignore them, they aren’t as important as the ‘progress’ that is being made. Whatever that is.
He announced an increase of more than 30% in the retail price of milk in an effort to ease shortages that have created headaches for consumers of all social classes.
All social classes? Even the poor? Isn’t that the group Chavez said he was trying to help. Funny how that works, eh?
“Anyone who is distributing food … and is speculating, we must intervene and we must expropriate (the business) and put it in the hands of the state and the communities,” Chavez said during the inauguration of a new state-run market in Caracas.
Hmm, if you ask me, I’d say that there isn’t much freedom here. I’m soooo confused. Isn’t it the left that screams freedom? I guess it’s A-Ok to take someones business, but don’t dare listen in on a phone conversation! That would be wrong!!!
Is it my imagination, or don’t the Venezuelans love their country? Remember, the left teaches us that it is patriotic to protest. I hear nothing of protests. I bet all those celebrities are proud of supporting this freedom loving dictator. I’m sure they’d love to have high inflation, price controls, scarce commodities, the military patrolling the borders and confiscating food. Yes sirree Bob, these great things are all yours, just remember to vote for the socialists come election time!!
