Harry Potter is ‘the wrong kind of hero’ according to the Vatican

Excuse me?

The Vatican condmened JK Rowling’s Harry Potter today describing the teen wizard as “the wrong kind of hero.” In a lengthy article in the Vatican’s official newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, headlined: “The double face of Harry Potter” it said it was wrong to compare Rowling’s books with the other childrens greats such as Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia.

The attack comes after the Potter series was also slammed by Pope Benedict XVI who said the seven books contained “subtle seductions” that undermined children’s religious development by blurring the line between good and evil.

“Despite several positive values that can be found in the story, at the foundations of this tale is the proposal that of witchcraft as positive, the violent manipulation of things and people thanks to the knowledge of the occult, an advantage of a select few: the ends justify the means because the knowledgeable, the chosen ones, the intellectuals know how to control the dark powers and turn them into good.

“This a grave and deep lie, because it is the old Gnostic temptation of confusing salvation and truth with a secret knowledge.”

L’Osservatore did admit that Potter was “rich in Christian values, he is an industrious and scientific magician.

They talk like she was supposed to be pushing for Christian values. Did you ever think that she could have been trying to push good values in a different way? Or maybe she just wanted to write a story that she thought people would like? She speaks a great deal about how people treat those that are different from them. Whether they be fellow humans or servants. I like that line about how you can get a good measure of someone’s character- it’s not by how they treat their equals, but by how they treat those that are under them. We can all learn from these messages, no?

So far I’ve never heard anyone leave their Church to become a witch. So I don’t know why they get their feathers all ruffled.

Congressional Candidate Appears Magically Skinnier in Doctored Campaign Photo

A mailer from a congressional candidate’s campaign contains a photo of his head attached to an image of a different body that makes him look thinner.

The photo is presented as a true image of Dean Hrbacek, a Republican former mayor of Sugar Land. In reality, it is a computerized composite of Hrbacek’s face and someone else’s slimmer figure, in suit and tie, from neck to knee.

Campaign manager Scott Broschart acknowledged to The Houston Chronicle that the image is a fake. Hrbacek has been so busy that he had no time to pose for a full-length photo for the mailing, Broschart said.

Right. Like I’m going to buy that lame excuse!

“He may appreciate that we took a few pounds off him,” Broschart said. “I think the voters … are more concerned with the issues as opposed to pretty photo shoots.”

Good comeback! We all know just how important the issues really are. We all have an incredible desire to know if a candidate prefers diamonds or pearls.

Wait a sec… was that Fox News or Faux News that did this story about a Republican? Hmm, must be showing their conservative bias again.

Is that it?

Golfweek Apologizes for Noose Cover, Replaces Editor

Golfweek apologized Friday for putting a noose on the cover of its magazine to illustrate the controversy over a Golf Channel anchor’s use of “lynch” in a comment about Tiger Woods.

The editor responsible for the cover was replaced.

“We were trying to convey the controversial issues with a strong and provocative graphic image. It is now obvious that the overall reaction to our cover deeply offended many people. For that, we are deeply apologetic.

Fired over showing a picture of a noose? Let’s all check the schoolbooks and make sure we don’t have any pictures of them in there too! There are a lot more offensive images that are printed in the local paper. Dead and mutilated bodies. Graphic descriptions of people killing each other too. And what about in the ‘entertainment’ industry? Check out this lovely song- Bitches Ain’t Shit. Does that offend you? No?

But she was hangin’ with a white bitch doin’ the shit she do”

Sounds pretty racist to me. I find it a lot more offensive than just a picture of a noose. So when are these double standards going to end? I don’t see the record label dropping Dr. Dre for his vile, racist and offensive lyrics. Why is it only white folks can be fired? The best answer I can come up with is what I saw many years ago in the manual for the game Civilization II:

(Selected text in describing fundamentalism) The diplomatic penalties for “terrorist acts”… committed by Diplomats and Spies is reduced, since the world comes to expect no better.

Is this the same case as black? The reason they can do as they please and not suffer the repercussions is because we just don’t expect any better of them? Then isn’t this just another way of saying they have lower standards/morals? For a group that demands equality but does not hold themselves up to the same standards (or better) than the ones they wish to be equal to is appalling. Is it really our fault that you are looked down upon (or so they say they are)?

Seems to me the solution is to actually hold those people in your group responsible for their actions and not just turning a blind eye to their wrongs.

If you want respect then you have to earn it. You can’t demand it, nor can you legislate it.
