Frozen bay turns otters into easy prey

An extra-cold winter on the Alaska Peninsula has frozen sea otters out of the bay and pushed them onto the tundra near Port Heiden where they’re easy prey for wolves, humans and hunger.Otter

The sea otters are probably on land looking for water where they might find food, said Douglas Burn, head of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Alaska sea otter program. They usually scour sea bottoms for clams or sea urchins, but the ice froze them out.

Similar die-offs have been documented before, but biologists are worried and keeping an eye on the situation, he said.

Western Alaska sea otters from the Aleutian Islands to Cook Inlet are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. They number 48,000, a drop of more than 50 percent in the last 20 years, the agency estimates.

Damn ‘Global Warming’ is killing them off! Curse you mankind for harming such poor helpless, and cute, creatures!

  1. WOW… with one post you discredited Global Warming.

    Congrats! 🙂

Hey, I didn’t write the article. It was the Anchorage Daily News. You know how it works…. I report, you deride.

But there have been cold records set in some places, right? I did say something about ‘Global Shifting’, right? Remember, you heard the phrase here first!!!

Meanwhile, ice in the north pole area is melting much earlier than normal. Polar bears are unable to successfully hunt for food, and are dying off.

Funny how it can be colder and warmer at the same time, no?

Something sounds fishy here. Be careful about what you read. People do have agendas on both sides of the fence. I’ll look at both and make my own decision. It would be foolish to only look at data that you might agree with. True knowledge dictates that you look at all sides of an issue and come to a reasonable conclusion.

I’ve seen plenty of information from both sides and I say the jury is still out on this one since ‘facts’ on one side contradict ‘facts’ on the other.
